I needed to actually sit down, think, and prepare book lists for my children's assigned reading time. Thus far we have been winging it, choosing books that I vaguely remember being on a list somewhere...
Here's what I've come up with so far for 2015.
My children are free to choose what they like to read, but for at least 30 minutes each day they must read from their current assigned book (and they must complete at least 1 chapter - within reason depending on the book - this stops the slack readers who might dawdle for 20 minutes on two paragraphs!) They can choose any book from their list, but they must finish it before starting another one!
These lists are by no means exhaustive of their reading habits. Both frequently read for an hour or more every evening before lights out. They choose from a variety of free reading books, both fiction and non. We try to follow the library borrowing idea set out in The Well-Trained Mind* so they are never short of reading material
