I'm just going to post an unedited run down of our day today. It is very difficult trying to pin down a 'typical' day in homeschooling, that's part of the joy and part of the frustration too! Especially for us lately, as our circumstances are shifting...
Today started with last night. I stayed up too late sorting and folding washing, and ordering my groceries online (yay Coles Click n Collect!). We had just gotten back from 2 days on our 20 acre property and picked up my niece on the way home. It's school holidays here and I agreed to look after her sometimes during the holidays - this year is her first year of full-time school.
I am naturally a night owl, to my own detriment. I find I get very productive between 11pm - 2am. Great, except my boys wake up with the sun...
I woke around 7.30am, average time for me. The kids were all already up. We wrangled some toast. Got everyone dressed. Morning jobs somewhat completed - my boys do love to drag their feet! By 9 we were packed and ready to go to Scienceworks! We were very excited to see the new Alice in Wonderland exhibit (you may remember my girl's obsession!) and to catch the Deep Ocean exhibit before it closes next week (that would be for WS, Mr. Wantstobe a Marine Biologist). Niece hasn't been to Scienceworks before so it's very exciting all around!
Everyone strapped in the car and I get a call from by dear husband, who is working away. I let the kids eat chips in the car while we chat for a few minutes. We're both such babies, can't stand to be apart! *sigh*
We arrive a little after 9.30am and easily get a park. It doesn't open until 10am, but I know it is going to be crazy busy! We stand in the line that is already beginning to lengthen (behind us, thankfully!) and wait to go in.
We had a great time, the Alice exhibit was lovely. We also had a quick look at the sports exhibit - can't visit Scienceworks without racing Cathy Freeman! Then back to the Think Ahead exhibit where they designed their own car and saw it appear on the giant wall-screen. Then over to Deep Ocean, where we learned about ocean 'monsters', played on some Octonauts themed equipment, and explored other ocean related displays.
I could not deal with Nitty Gritty Super City during school holidays so we left after about 2 hours, picked up our groceries on the way home without leaving the car (yay Coles Click n Collect again!) and home for lunch!
Our friends arrived after lunch, with hot cross buns! We meet weekly for a piano lesson, art project and Latin. We did piano first. Then WS joined our friend's daughter - his kindred spirit - in watching Song School Latin lessons while I had another piano student. WR and her cousin were playing checkers, and SS was generally capering around causing trouble. He had only slept about 10 minutes (in the car) since 7am at this stage...
Art! We did a project from a new workshop I signed up to: Springtime Splendor! - even though it's autumn here. We did the Watercolour Bluebird project and it was a success! Wanna see?
WR, WS, WG from the top down. WG couldn't wait for the watercolours so just did his in crayon, I thought it turned out adorably (for a 4 year old!) so kept it that way!My mother in law picked up my niece. Our friends went home. I let the kids play some computer games, WR interspersed this with reading her new book - The Fallacy Detective - and watercolour painting with renewed vigour. I hung out some washing, had another coffee, comforted the crying, teething and generally grumpy toddler who still hasn't slept...
Dinner, read a chapter from our book 'Carry On, Mr. Bowditch' (over the top of a screaming toddler who dumped his entire dinner on the floor...), showers, into bed and prayers.
And now here I am. I've written two blog posts now! I'm going to call my husband in half an hour. In the meantime I'll log off, bring in the laundry before the spiders make their home in it. I'll clear the dinner table (and floor... ugh.) and probably do the dishes. I'll see what's on TV. I'll organise our school stuff for tomorrow - I still have a good-to-go itemized planner from a couple of days ago so it's just a matter of packing their drawers. I'll probably fold laundry while watching TV. I'll eventually wander my lonely self off to shower and bed...
Good night!
